Comments from the CEO Kaoru Kato (Results for the 1Q FY2013, announced on July 26, 2013)
In the three months ended June 30, 2013, operating revenue was 1,113.6 billion yen for a year-on-year increase of 41.3 billion yen, and operating income was 247.5 billion yen for a year-on-year decline of 15.2 billion yen. In terms of revenue, due to proactive sales and broader use of smartphones and Xi, packet revenue and equipment sales revenue increased, and revenue from new business fields grew steadily. In terms of income, although there was a decline in profit due to such factors as an expansion of reduced revenue effect caused by Monthly Support and increased amortization expense that accompanied Xi area enhancement, income is higher than the initial plan. This can be considered a robust start toward the achievement of the income target for the year.
This term, with the key words, "easy to understand, easy to choose," "DOCOMO's Two Top" was deployed in order to provide an attractive device with special features for a reasonable price. As a result, the number of smartphones sold increased year-on-year by 34.4% to 3.35 million units, and the number of Xi subscriptions increase by 4.3 times to 14.2 million.
With regard to the network, we strengthened our commitment to the slogan "Strong." and we placed No. 1 in both area size and download speed according to the results of the latest LTE area survey by a third-party organization.
With the DOCOMO original service deployed under the inclusive title "dmarket," the number of "dvideo" subscriptions recently reached 4.56 million, and the use of "dhits" and "danime store" is steadily growing. The gross billing for "dmarket" in the three months ended June 30, 2013 was 3.1 times that of the same period of the previous fiscal year. In addition, we started providing the "Osusume Pack" and the "Anshin Pack" for convenient and secure use; and most recently, these have respectively reached 1.1 million and 1.8 million subscriptions.
DOCOMO will continue to promote "expansion of smartphone user base," "creation of new revenue sources such as dmarket" and "structural reforms for the reinforcement of managerial foundation," and work together as an entire company in our endeavor toward achieving operating income of 840 billion yen this fiscal year.
