TOKYO, JAPAN, March 2, 2015 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC., a personalized mobile solutions provider for smarter living, announced today that it will conduct a three-way 5G technical collaboration with China Mobile Communications Corporation and KT Corporation of South Korea based on an agreement reached in Barcelona, Spain on March 1.

In a joint statement, DOCOMO announced that it would team up with these two other leading mobile operators in Asia to accelerate 5G commercial deployments and drive standardization efforts, as well as facilitate discussions with diverse mobile technology companies and research institutions.

DOCOMO initiated its 5G research and development in 2010, undertaking extensive indoor and outdoor field tests together with worldwide research bodies and leading ICT vendors. The company aims to launch a 5G mobile communication service in Japan in time for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

DOCOMO, China Mobile and KT, since agreeing on a three-way business collaboration in 2011, have been closely cooperating in mobile services, such as international LTE roaming and mutual content distribution between the three countries. Based on this new agreement, the companies look forward to better serving their respective mobile users and contributing to the continued development of Asia's telecommunications market.

Joint Statement on 5G Collaboration among CMCC-DOCOMO-KT

With fast deployment of 4G and explosive growth in mobile traffic, the further development of mobile internet will trigger the mobile traffic growth by a magnitude of thousands in the future and promote a new wave of revolution in mobile communication technologies and the ecosystem. Meanwhile, with the extension of Internet of Things (IoT), mobile communication technologies will penetrate into broader vertical markets.
Our 5G vision is that 5G will break through the limitation of time and space to enable an immersive and interactive user experience and penetrate into every element of daily life and create an all-dimensional, user-centered information society. To achieve this, 5G will be able to provide extremely high data rate and deliver a consistent experience across a variety of scenarios including the cases of ultra-high traffic volume density, ultra-high connection density, and ultra-high mobility. 5G will also improve energy and cost efficiency by over a hundred of times, enabling to realize a sustainable ecosystem.

To bridge the smooth network evolution from 4G to 5G and build a sustainable 5G ecosystem, the operators will play an important role. It's the operators' mission to drive the 5G global standardization and industrialization work in a market and requirement-oriented way. CMCC, DOCOMO and KT will extend their close collaboration from 4G to 5G activities:

  • Elaborate and integrate 5G requirements, particularly in the Asian market
  • Explore the new service and vertical market of 5G
  • Jointly identify 5G key technologies and prove the validity of system concepts
  • Collaborate with global organizations (e.g. ITU, 3GPP, GSMA, NGMN, GTI...) to achieve the global harmonized spectrum planning and a unified global 5G standard

The global cooperation is the foundation for the success of 5G. Consequently we are willing to cooperate with other global industry organizations, operators, manufacturers, universities, and research institutes, to build a healthy and sustainable 5G ecosystem.
