NTT DoCoMo to Support Agroforestry Initiative in Indonesia

TOKYO, JAPAN, March 25, 2004 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced today that the company will support an agroforestry initiative in the Salak sub-district of Indonesia's Sumatra island. The project will be conducted by Conservation International, a global non-governmental organization. With its headquarter in Washington D.C. in the United States, Conservation International works in more than 40 countries on four continents.

DoCoMo will donate 15 million yen to Conservation International, with the specific purpose of supporting their agroforestory initiative in the area for three and a half years beginning on April 1, 2004.

While Indonesia has one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems on earth, the island of Sumatra has recently experienced severe degradation of its rainforests. To restore Salak's natural ecosystem, Conservation International will reforest the degraded area by applying agroforestry method with endemic plant species in order to enable sustainable agriculture, transfer agricultural technologies to local farmers, and conserve biodiversity by developing a corridor between protected forest areas. Conservation International sees Salak as a model case for this agroforestry initiative in Indonesia, and aims to continue the program's expansion elsewhere.

DoCoMo, as a part of ongoing efforts to be a good corporate citizen, is an enthusiastic supporter of environmental projects. The company is presently spearheading many in-house environmental initiatives, including recycling, resource conservation, and forestration. The project in Indonesia will be DoCoMo's first biodiversity initiative overseas.
