TOKYO, JAPAN, February 19, 2004 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced today that FOMA®, the world's first 3G service based on W-CDMA technology, will be demonstrated via a direct link to Japan during the 3GSM World Congress 2004 in Cannes, France from February 23 to 26.
This year, the company's fourth appearance in the Congress, DoCoMo — in cooperation with Fujitsu Limited and Alcatel — will demonstrate the FOMA service using a base station relocated from a 3G showroom hosted by Alcatel in Paris. The base station will be connected directly to the FOMA network in Japan through an international private line. Visitors using just-released 900i handsets will experience FOMA's many rich features, including videophone and i-mode® mobile internet. They will even be able to communicate with DoCoMo personnel located in Heian Jingu Shrine of world-famous Kyoto, Japan — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — to enjoy real-time video calls.
DoCoMo's FOMA 3G service, currently enjoyed by more than two million subscribers in Japan, just introduced the 900i series of all-new advanced handsets, which is expected to rapidly boost subscriptions.
The DoCoMo booth will also offer continuous demonstrations of a GPS-based service that people in Japan use to check the locations and arrival times of public buses via i-mode mobile phone. The service has become quite popular in big cities, where buses often run late in rush-hour traffic.
In another corner of the DoCoMo booth, visitors will experience a 3G service for remote operations via mobile phones, such as turning on a heater or programming a video recording before returning home, or visually monitoring rooms in a home if an intruder is detected.
In addition, a display will introduce DoCoMo's global i-mode alliance of partner companies that provide i-mode services, as well as exhibit actual i-mode handsets offered by partners
The DoCoMo booth will be located at Hall 2, E57.
During the Congress, Mr. Takeshi NATSUNO, the Managing Director of DoCoMo's i-mode Planning Department, will serve as a panelist in Track 1 Session 5: Working with Content to Create Advanced Services (14:15 - 15:45, February 25) and also present a case study of i-mode during Track 2 Session 6: Managing International Mobile Data Alliances (16:45 - 18:15, February 25).
3GSM World Congress, one of the world's biggest international gatherings of the mobile telecommunications industry, will be held at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres in Cannes. Participants from more than 100 countries are expected.
