NTT DoCoMo Announces Latest Anti-Spam Measure

Products & Services

TOKYO, JAPAN, November 5, 2003 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and its eight regional subsidiaries announced today that i-mode® users will be able to automatically reject e-mails from any i-mode handset that sends 200 or more e-mails per day beginning January 8, 2004.

DoCoMo established a limit of 1,000 e-mails per i-mode handset to help combat spamming on October 20. Certain spammers have continued to abuse the system, however, by restricting their daily quota of emails to this limit. The new measure is targeted directly at these spammers.

The e-mail-blocking feature will be turned on as the default setting for i-mode handsets. Users can turn off the feature at the "iMenu" official i-mode portal site, and there will be no packet transmission charge for changing the setting.

DoCoMo is committed to protecting the convenience and usefulness of its mobile internet services by aggressively pursing spammers. Among other countermeasures, DoCoMo now reserves the right to suspend — or even rescind — all handset contracts registered to any company identified as a spammer. As of October 28, DoCoMo had suspended 1,875 contracts held by such companies.

In line with official requirements, DoCoMo notified the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Post and Telecommunications of the service.
