Mobile Communications Network -6.Connection Procedures for Packet Communications (PDC)

Before a mobile unit can send packets, packet communications registration must be completed with the packet subscriber equipment (PPM). The PPM receiving the packet communications registration request from the mobile unit notifies the M-SCP that it is conducting packet communications, while at the same time executes user authentication on the basis of user information received from the M-SCP. If the user authentication is approved, the PPM establishes a line connection to the PGW, starts packet communications and initiates the transmission and reception of packets by sending a packet communications registration response to the mobile unit.

In the case of packet termination at a mobile unit, the mobile unit is first called. This called mobile unit conducts packet communications registration similar to the case of call origination, and initiates packet communications.

To halt packet communications, the mobile unit first transmits a packet communications release request to the PPM, which then releases the packet communications status at the M-SCP. The PPM also transfers the release request response to the mobile unit, as well as disconnects the line to the PGW. The release of packet communications is completed when the packet communications registration release confirmation from the mobile unit and the line disconnection response from the PGW reach their respective PPMs.
